About Me

I am a specialist criminal litigator with over 10 years experience prosecuting and defending people at trial and on appeal in the District Court, High Court and Court of Appeal.

I am recognised for my judgement, my clear and focused advice, and my commitment to my clients.

I began my career in a small Christchurch firm where my practice encompassed property and commercial transactions as well as civil and criminal litigation. After a number of years, I moved to the New Zealand Police where I was employed as a senior prosecutor. In that role I was responsible for a broad criminal caseload as well as managing cases involving serious driving offending which had resulted in death and/or serious injury.

I left the Police to join the office of the Crown Solicitor in Christchurch where I was a Senior Crown Prosecutor responsible for prosecuting serious and complex crime (including charges of murder, serious assault, sexual, drug and fraud offending) and appearing as counsel in specialist jurisdictions such as the Youth Court, Family Court and in coronial proceedings.

During my time in the office of the Crown Solicitor I was also responsible for prosecuting cases of complex regulatory offending on behalf of a range of government agencies. I have particular expertise in prosecutions brought by the Ministry of Primary Industries (where I led the prosecution of some of the most serious allegations of animal welfare offending to have come before the courts) and the Ministry of Health (where I led the prosecution of charges arising out of the country's most extensive investigations into the illegal importation, manufacture and distribution of performance and image enhancing drugs).

In mid-2016 I joined the Public Defence Service in Christchurch as a Senior Lawyer where my practice focused on defending those facing allegations of serious and complex criminal offending. I also regularly appeared as appellate counsel in the High Court and Court of Appeal and before the Parole Board.

In October 2017 I commenced practice at the independent bar.

My Practice

I specialise in defending allegations of criminal and regulatory offending (including traffic related matters).

I am available to provide representation when an investigation is contemplated or underway, at trial and on appeal.

I am also available to provide representation in employment disputes, before professional disciplinary bodies, and in specialist courts and tribunals.

I accept private instructions in relation to any matter within my area of practice.

I am an approved legal aid provider and am available to accept assignments on a counsel of choice basis where a person is facing allegations of serious or complex offending (in most cases offences involving a maximum penalty of 14 years imprisonment or more).
